About Us

Our History in Fredericton-Oromocto

In 1967, the Big Brothers Association of Fredericton, Inc. was founded, subsequent to a committee of the Kiwanis Club of Fredericton investigating the feasibility of establishing a local chapter of the organization.   In 1969, the association formed its own Board of Directors, became recognized by Big Brothers of Canada and became a member agency of the United Way. The chairman of the feasibility committee, Gordon Petrie, was named the first President of the Big Brothers Association of Fredericton.

Since the late sixties, the "Big Brother" philosophy has thrived and flourished in the Fredericton area and our agency has now expanded to include Oromocto.  In 1980, we added the Big Sisters program, then introduced Cross Gender Matching of Big Sisters to Little Brothers in 1991.  In 1998, our agency began the In-School Mentoring Program. The Big Bunch Friendship Program was added in 2009.

Over the years our agency has helped hundreds of children in our community and we look forward to serving many more . With the support of members of the Fredericton and Oromocto area, we will continue  "to promote the healthy development of children in our community through the provision of quality mentoring relationships with supportive, responsible adult volunteers".
